It’s the economy, my friend!

I had an interesting conversation with a gallery owner I know. First, she asked me if I have shown my art anywhere. Not for a while, I said. The last time was in June 2011. I’ve submitted my work to galleries (online and otherwise) and have had my share of rejections and few commendations. The few paintings I’ve sold were to friends who have visited or stayed at my apartment cum studio. It’s been bad since 2010, I said.

She lamented how slow the sales are in coming and is at a loss what else to do to improve the situation. She has a beautiful gallery and, given that we were both not the aggressive salesperson type, we still discussed ways in which she could bring in income like renting it out to small receptions or to artists for group exhibitions. It’s been done (and still is) by galleries before. In these difficult times, why not?
